SharePoint Service 3.0 Released

Filed under: Office — Jason Hartley @ 11:48 am

Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) 3.0 Released to Manufacturing (RTM) today. You can download it directly from Microsoft Downloads here.

There is an upgrade path from the Beta 2 Technical Refresh release. If you have Beta 2 installed without the TR, you need to apply the TR before you can install the release version. The required upgrade path is:

“WSS 3.0 Beta 2 > WSS 3.0 Beta 2 TR > WSS 3.0 Release”

Regarding Windows Small Business Server 2003 (SBS 2003) - follow the instructions in “Installing Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 on a Server Running Windows Small Business Server 2003,” or the of SBS 2003 and WSS 3.0 may not work properly and probably will not be supported.

Watch the web site for the release of the Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Templates. I have been in the partner feedback program for these templates and they are outstanding. I can’t comment on them however because NDA. They will increase the use of WSS big time.

Cannot uninstall Office 2007 Beta

Filed under: Office — Jason Hartley @ 10:54 am

I recently ran into a problem when trying to uninstall the Office 2007 Beta 2 Technical Refresh from a computer. Not all of the software would uninstall using the Add/Remove Programs applet. After searching the web and the news groups for a way to manually remove (force and uninstall) the Office 2007 beta suite, I found a link to the solution posted in the Microsoft Partner Managed Newsgroups.

The steps in the post Manually removing the Office 2007 Beta on the PSchmid.net site are the only steps that worked for removing the Office Beta from this particular computer. Hopefully, this will save someone else some time  in searching for the solution.

Thanks to Patrick Schmid for the post.

Moving DHCP to another server

Filed under: Uncategorized — Jason Hartley @ 3:47 pm

Moving DHCP services from a Windows Server to another Windows Server can be done quite simply. Follow the instructions in the KB listed below and review the other Tech Center Articles.

  • Microsoft KB 325473 -  “How to move a DHCP database from a computer that is running Windows NT Server 4.0, Windows 2000, or Windows Server 2003 to a computer that is running Windows Server 2003″

Non-technical descriptions of SharePoint

Filed under: Uncategorized — Jason Hartley @ 11:08 am

I have been looking for a good basic description of the different SharePoint technologies and have not been able to find any. Most of the descriptions I find are very technical or use a lot of marketing terms that really have no real meaning to a common business person. I have created the following descriptions of the SharePoint technologies which I think could be understood by a business person or a non-technical person…  If you use these descriptions in your materials please leave me a comment or drop me an email.

Windows SharePoint Services is a web based information hub for a company, department, or team to easily share information. SharePoint is designed to integrate with the Microsoft Office Suite and allows employees to easily collaborate on documents, including keeping multiple versions and managing document changes. SharePoint makes it easy for managers to enable new collaboration sites for teams to work on documents, spreadsheets, forms, and images. SharePoint is also designed for the sharing of calendars, surveys, contacts, tasks, and discussions. A powerful search feature enables employees to find information which they have permission to view or edit quickly.

Microsoft Office SharePoint Server takes users to a new level by providing a full set of collaboration and personalization features help Information Workers aggregate, search, share, and target content in a more efficient way. This highly scalable collaboration platform delivers greater control over storage, security, distribution, and management of electronic content to business users.  Microsoft Office SharePoint Server is customizable through using pre-built templates to help organizations integrate business processes and applications into the web-based portal. Using SharePoint Designer, SharePoint Workflow Designer, and Visual Studio development tools provides even greater flexibility developing custom business solutions based upon Microsoft Office SharePoint Server.

Use the date as the NT Backup file name.

Filed under: Uncategorized — Jason Hartley @ 11:02 am

By default, using the %date% variable in the ntbackup command line returns the date with the “/” in the string. You can modify the display of the date output variable by using a character replace switch. For example, using the following command will execute NT Backup performing a normal backup including the system state data and save it to a file using the date as the name, replacing the “/” with a “-”…

ntbackup backup systemstate /f “c:\%date:/=-%.bkf%” /m normal

Great web based security tool for decrypting MD5 hashes at  http://www.md5decrypt.com/ This site has a database of common words and the MD5 hashes. Not all hashes are in the library, but many are.
